We were very fortunate to secure a beach front site at a caravan park in Harvey Bay for 2 nights. (Lucky, as there are the Grey Nomads who come up here year after year and secure the same good site, our neighbour has been coming here for 20 years, 3 months at a time and always on the same site. Onto Bundaberg we enjoyed drinking and tasting their many local delights; the Bundaberg Rum Factory; Bundaberg Ginger Beer Factory, Shalom Markets, a strawberry farm and some roadside fruit and Vegie stalls. Some delights should make it home, others won't last. Wish we could get some of these goodies back at home. Continuing South, we stopped in for a couple of nights at Agnes Water and the township of 1770. Called 1770, as this was the year that Captain Cook sailed in. Again the beaches are a highlight, together with the brief boardwalk and stepping stone walk that takes you through a Paperbark Forest with maiden hair fern growing in abundance. The boys were able to catch a Spanish Mackerel from the beach just near our camp.

We then move onto Yeppoon. Yet another town with so much recent development. $52 million was spent on the waterfront, building an enormous lagoon and waterfront facilities. It was a lovely setting to the beautiful beach and blue water backdrop. We took a ferry out to Great Keppel Island to spend a day snorkelling the southern Barrier Reef. We explore out to Cape Hillsborough. On the beach we see a couple of people racing around the beach with what looks like a trike base and a wind surfer sail, these were flying fast, thanksfully there was next to no body on the beach. We took a steep walk up to the lookout. From the top we could see a large eagle soaring the sky. We finish exploring the Mackay Region with a visit west out to Eungella National Park.
