After escaping the hill tribe girls wanting to marry us (Black Hmong girl Lili was quite into us..) in Sa Pa we quickly took a night train back to Hanoi. Probably not the smartest idea but when we arrived back to Hanoi at 5 a.m. we decided to book another night train leaving that evening to Hue.
Hue is famous for it's Emperial Citadel but we actually preferred the local beach bar.. After Hue we ended up in probably the prettiest town Vietnam has to offer: Hoi An. Hoi An has a nice beach, peaceful city center off limits to motorbikes, meaning you can finally cross the street in a fairly safe way. First night in Hoi An was not the best night in SE Asia so far.. hotel was filled with bed bugs who totally enjoy a midnight snack..
Hoi An has a bar street nowadays with 24 hour happy hours, selling beers at 10.000 VND (35 cents), really our kind of town.
After 4 nights of partying and visiting Da Nang, Marble Mountain, and My Son ruins by motorbike (including 2 visits to the local garage to get the cheap motorbikes roadworthy again) we moved to Nha Thrang, also known as Little Russia. The town is nowadays infested by Russian package tourists on free visas sponsored by the Vietnamese government.. not our kind of place at all as even restaurant menus are in the Russian language.
Had another short stop in beach town Mui Ne, kite-surfing hotspot of Vietnam. Our luck, arrived in the wrong season so no wind at all. In Ho Chi Minh City now, formerly known as Saigon. HCMC is the biggest city in Vietnam, totaling over 5 million motorbikes, but luckily for us it is Vietnamese summer holidays so it's actually quite relaxing. Beers are sold at 12.000 VND per bottle on the streets so they are filled with backpackers getting drunk for a couple of euro's.
Surprising maybe but we even do some cultural stuff down here! Visited a museum (!!!), crawled through the Co Chi tunnels once used by the Vietcong during the war with the US and we visited the Mekong Delta.
AND, last but not least, we found a gym.. a local gym that is filled with shirtless Vietnamese bodybuilders... excellent :-)
Tomorrow we head down to Ha Tien, just next to the Cambodian border, from where we will try to find ourselves a boat that can bring us to Phu Quoc island for more tanning, beach footy and a beer or two perhaps..
