Over two months ago since this blog has been updated, either we have been very lazy or very busy but it is about time to give away a summary of the last two months!
Nils found a pretty decent jobs in removals in the lovely town of Darwin, Northern Australia. Removals basically means you move stuff from A to B and when you move stuff in Darwin this means heavy work in 40+ degrees heat. Not the best working conditions but it means we can continue travelling for a little while longer!
As my Indonesia visa was expiring I had to leave the country and decided to go to Malaysia for a bit before getting back to lovely Indonesia once more. Cheapest option was a 7 euro flight to Penang (yes, flights for less than 10 euros are not uncommon in Asia), and island on Malaysia's west coast. Penang's capital Georgetown is an amazing little town with arguably Malaysia's best street food. The whole town is filled with Hawker centers, basically a large area filled with different stands selling a variety of Malaysian, Indian and Thai food. Besides the amazing street food Georgetown is well known for its funky street art, you could easily spend a couple of days wandering around town and you will see new wall paintings each and every day.
As I am more into natural wonders instead of art I decided to go to the beach, which was supposed to be a short ferry away in Langkawi island. Some tourists might still be amazed by Langkawi but after all those amazing beaches in The Philippines and Indonesia, Langkawi is just not that great (which is an understatement, the island is just s***..).
Just spend 1 night on Langkawi before making the decision to go to Thailand for a couple of days, why not! I landed on Koh Lipe, got yet another stamp in my passport (which is unfortunately half full already..) and seriously arrived in paradise. Crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches and a totally relaxed atmosphere on this little Thai island which is just an hour away from Langkawi!
After a quick stopover in Kuala Lumpur I got myself back to Indonesia, Yogyakarta to be precise. Lovely to be back in this great country as immediately airport officials trying to direct you to money exchange counters with a 50% commission or to their brother's taxi service which costs about 15 times more than the local bus.
From Java I needed to get to Bali (what better place to celebrate your birthday) so booked a two day bus trip which would take me all the way to Kuta. Saw Mount Bromo on the way and survived a ferry which looked like it could start sinking any minute now.
After yet another amazing night in Kuta, which actually starts to feel like coming home considering how many times we have visited the place, I decided to spend Christmas 2014 on a surf board and flew to Kuta Lombok. Only problem was, my passport was at the Bali Immigration Office for yet another visa extension. Problem?!?! No... not in Indonesia where flying without a passport is absolutely not a problem. You pay for a flight so you get a flight, nobody cares about your passport...
After an amazing Christmas surfing (or better, trying to stand up on a board trying not to kill myself) Nils came over from Australia to celebrate New Years in Indonesia. We decided to go to party island Gili Trawangan for New Years, together with the rest of the backpackers currently in Indonesia it seemed. As we arrived on the island on the 31st of December pretty much everything was totally booked and prices had increased dramatically. On our last visit to the island, some months back, we paid around 120-140.000 rupees for a room which had now increased to 1.5 million rupees... Of course we were never going to pay 100 euros per night as backpackers on a backpacker island resulting in us walking around the island for at least 2 hours before stumbling into a new guesthouse which had opened its doors two days before. They had one room available for 350.000 rupees, well done Brothers on Tour!
We have now both left Asia as Nils got back to Darwin to move stuff from A to B and I have arrived in New Zealand! To be honest a huge shock to arrive in a Western country again, instead of paying a dollar a beer, they dare to ask 8 dollars in New Zealand! Instead of having a private bungalow in Asia for a couple of dollars I am currently sleeping in a windowless dorm room for 29 dollars... Kia Ora New Zealand!
