We enjoyed a little sleep-in for the last day in Amsterdam. After a quick breakfast we left the hotel for our final meander around the streets. We leisurely strolled around the Amsterdam flower markets where you can buy all types of bulb, providing it is of a tulip variety. And of course seeds are plentiful...
After a little shopping we found a traditional Dutch restaurant where we dined on fresh Salted Herrings, traditional Pea and Ham Soup, and a Stoppinpottin - meatball, spicy sausage, bacon, mash-potato, sauerkraut, and a thick gravy. To quote Rossco "everything a growing boy needs!".
In an effort to walk off lunch, we waddled around the museum of Amsterdam which took us back in time and told the story of the founding and development of Amsterdam from the little Dam in the 1100's to the city it is today. Very enjoyable.
One final note on Amsterdam. These people are crazy about bicycles. With only 800,000 people living in Amsterdam there are over 1.1Million bikes...amazing. The bikes are everywhere, attached to every railing, front gate and light-post. Now, I don't share their passion however I commend Amsterdam for its lack of pollution and for its commitment to a greener planet. Well done!
Thanks Amsterdam. We board and overnight sleeper train now, bound for Prague.
