Today's plan was to travel to Monaco, however the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry...
We had planned to catch the sardine train (without luggage) to Monaco. We walked back to the station to catch the train however what we didn't count on was that the trains leave infrequently on a Saturday: instead of every 30 minutes on a weekday. As we were due at the airport at 3 pm and the next train was 12:55, with travel time we would be spending at maximum 1 hour in Monaco! So we decided to spend another day discovering Nice, and I'm so glad we did.
We discovered one of the best pleasures of Nice as we wondered through the outdoor markets along the Cours Saleya in the Old Town. Rows of fresh flowers, spices and treats to delight the senses can be seen at these markets. On either side of the market are several shops, boutiques and cafes. There is also an old antiques market, arts and crafts and a significant selection of old 1900's advertising posters, at which I indulged in a little Capiello to add to my collection. We meandered through the little cobblestone alleys and browsed through the quaint shops. Of course there was also the obligatory ale and lunch stop at a beautiful little cafe hidden down one of the alleys.
We headed back to the hotel and checked out to head straight to the airport. We were pleased having spent a wonderfully relaxing afternoon in Nice and ever so glad that we swapped the rush of a visit to Monaco to stay in Nice, albeit a deviation from the plan.
