We were warned that Switzerland is expensive, to the extent that the Swiss take holidays to Konstanz so that they can take advantage of the cheaper products in the retailers there. But there is something to be said for Switzerland : it really is very beautiful. Hasliberg is a very quiet little snow resort, almost empty in Summer. We checked into our accommodation at the quirky Hotel Wetterhorn, and headed of for the Reichenbach Falls, site of the (fictitious) Sherlock Holmes/Moriarty tussle. We caught the funicular railway up towards the falls, and walked the path towards the top. We followed this up with a trip through the Aareschluck, an amazing canyon of glacier water, fashioned through the pummelling action of melted snow and boulders over thousands of years, but made accessible by the mountain goats of construction workers who have made and maintained the path way through it. Just glorious.
The following day, I took a turn at driving, and since we are still here to write about it, you can tell that we survived. We have developed a mantra ‘just keep right’ useful for all kinds of situations, including avoiding the little black squirrel that galloped across the road as I turned into it for the first time ..... then we headed for Interlaken - where we discovered it was the Swiss National Day. But we also bought a conglomeration of tickets to get us up to The Shilthorn - train, cable car, train and 2 more cable cars. But it was such an experience. Up on the top of Schilthorn, eventually in the midst of a thunderstorm, with the whole platform buzzing with static, and the ubiquitous selfie stick photographers sporting hair-dos sticking out all over the place. Eventually we were all summoned back indoors to relative safety. And it took about 2hours to reverse the journey. The photo for today is sunset on the range opposite our hotel - not, unfortunately the view from our room, but certainly from the road outside where we took our evening walk.

Barbara Love your blog, a million years ago, 1967 to be exact, we were in Switzerland and it poured raining, we cut our trip short and went to Italy, where the weather was great and I must admit Italy has left us with fond memories. Love to you both
Liz We stayed at Hasliberg too in September 2014...... yes it was empty in the ski lodge we stayed at but they had an amazing brekky and the views were amazing. Switzerland is by far my favourite place.
