Our ship tendered off-shore. Took the tender to the Island of Guernsey, then took a small ferry to the island of Herm, population now 67 as a baby was born on Friday.
My Shore excursion was the " Herm Island Walk", our tour guide was Lesley; she and her husband live on the island rent-free as everyone who lives there works in the tourism industry, The island used to be in the granite quarry business, and most of the homes are made of granite, They have three volunteer constables.
We walked to the beach on the north side of the island, then walked back to the center of the island. Beautiful little island with very friendly folks. Very few buildings, lots of natural beauty. There is a cemetery from the 1830s with two unknown bodies, probably cholera victims who worked at the quarries. There were several Neolithic burial pits.
The Herm flag was created in 1980, and the island is run by Herm Island Limited.
I met several couples from Youngstown, Ohio who walked around with me. We took the ferry back to Guernsey and had lunch at The Catch Bistro and Bar. I had Guernsey crab cakes and calamari. Absolutely delicious!
I could live on Herm Island! Beautiful day in a gorgeous little oasis!
