Brian's mum arrived safely from Ireland and we spent the weekend taking her around the tourist spots of Buenos Aires. First stop Recoleta and the famous cemetery where Eva Peron is buried, along with some Irish bloke, Admiral Brown, who discovered something or other, or maybe he built it, I can't quite remember, but he is Irish, that I do know, because I was told it about 50 times.
Then it was off to San Telmo, a quaint old quarter, full of cobblestones, crumbling buildings and, on the weekend, tango dancers and street stalls selling all manner of Argentinean souvenirs. We found an Irish Pub, noted some Irish people going past and saw something green that reminded us all fondly of Ireland.
Then we headed off to La Boca, a poor port area that is quite run-down and distinctly rough around the edges, but at the centre lies a touristy area called La Caminita where the houses are painted different colours, apparently because the owners used to scrounge old paint from the ships and never quite had enough to paint a complete wall. La Boca is also home to Boca Juniors, the football club that some footballer called Maradona used to play for before he was touched by God. Allegedly.
We stopped to watch a few, very talented street tango dancers and persuaded Sue to have her photo taken in a few tango poses with a handsome young tango dancer with 'bewitching eyes' (her words, not mine!). Not that she needed much persuading; she is loving all things Argentinean, including the ice-creams which we sample at every opportunity. Sadly, Guinness flavour is not yet available, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.
