Day two of our Friesland visit was a walk in history day as we visited the 'Aldfaers Zwerf Route'. First stop was Exmorra where we went to a building which contains a grocery shop (part historic museum but also still sold some products that were available 'back in the day'), the grocers home, a school classroom and a shoe maker shop. The beds were in a cupboard and were so short that people would sleep sitting up. In the parents 'bed cupboard' there was also a 'cot' for the baby to sleep just above their feet!
We piled back into the Buick and headed to the museum village in Allingawier. There they have an old church, a blacksmith workshop (with a guy working), a bakery, a skutsje (which is the type of boat my Pake was born on and lived in for the first few years) and many more old buildings. They also had a farm house as they were back in the day. It was extremely weird how the barn and house were all under the same roof. After visiting these places it made me very glad to live now and not back then!
Oom Arjen then took us to see the Jopie Huisman museum. He was a Frisian self-taught painter. While we aren't art buffs it was interesting to see how he was able to paint in so many different mediums and styles.
Danielle & Steve then left to make their way back to London so we took the obligatory photos by the family-famous wolf sculpture before waving them off.
When Oom Arjen returned he took us to see the church he helps keep and we popped down the road to tick off another spirit ;) The pub was kept in its original state with the old stove at the back for heating the place. It was extremely weird to go into a pub with people smoking! Oom Arjen got Brett to try the Dutch and Friesian versions of Berenburg - a very herby spirit. While we were there things got a little odder when a man walked in with his dog, then lifted him up onto the barstool to sit at the bar beside him.
When we got home Tante Anna made a comment about how long we'd been away. Oom Arjen very quickly replied that we spent a long time at the church reflecting and only 5 minutes in the pub! Hmmm ;)
Thanks very much Tante Anna & Oom Arjen for having us at your home and showing us around Friesland!

Mum B I remember going into that pub - the owner must wonder "How many 'foreign' relatives does Oom Arjen have?"
