Our Greenline bus left at 8am bound for Chitwan. The bus ride was uneventful as long as you didn't watch the drivers overtaking on blind corners. For lunch we stopped at a nice resort for a quick buffet lunch inc. in our ticket and we could feel that the temperature had increased. It was another 2.5hrs to Chitwan, 6.5hrs in total so once we arrived and were picked up by our hotel we went in search of some cheaper deals on all the activities we wanted to do here. We checked with a friendly helpful guy in a tiny bare office and he seemed to be quoting reasonable prices. Enquiring with another we decided the first guy, Bikram, was the one to go with. It was after 4 so firstly we had him organise a horse & cart (the local popular style of transport) to the Elephant Breeding centre which was on the other side of the river so we had to cross the 'Mississippi bridge' which was a basic bamboo structure with sandbags underfoot. We were surprised that Bikram was acting not just as a ticket booker but also a bonus guide. Once at the breeding centre we walked around the basic wooden shelters to see the baby & mother elephants but were a little dismayed by their legs being chained so they couldn't really move far. One small elephant was obviously not used to the chain as it tried to stretch past the constraints of the chain in every direction. On the way back from the elephant centre we stopped at Bikram's house which was a basic long shape cement block house with about 4 rooms- it was basic to say the least. It really makes you realise how lucky we are. The horse & cart dropped us at the edge of the river so we could enjoy the sunset dropping over the jungle and some dinner. We finally booked the rest of our activities on the way back past Bikram's office then walked the short distance to our hotel to wash off the dust, sunscreen & insect repellent before our big day tomorrow.
