Day 81 Granada
An hour further south/east is a lovely town called Granada. We entered the town and immediately had a good feeling about it. Again, nice cobble stone streets and a old colonial buildings in bright colours, similar to Antigua. Only one hour away from the big city but just so different.
We checked into a great little hostel and asked for a recommendation for breakfast. Kathy's Waffle house which was just around the corner. We walked the few blocks, through the narrow streets until we came to a bustling cafe opposite the Church of San Francisco. This place was packed with Sunday morning brunch goers. We walked up the few steps to the balcony and saw enormous plates of pancakes, omelettes, brown bread and home-made potatoes, we were sold. It was just like heading out on a Sunday back home. There were families and friends, locals and tourists it was just buzzing. We actually had to wait for a table, only 5 minutes or so but it was well worth it. We sat down, scoured the expansive menu and then decided to order a vegetarian omelette to share as well as a fruit smoothie each. While we were waiting the church doors opened and everyone from the morning session started to wander out across the courtyard and into the cafe. A few guys set up fire crackers along the courtyard and continued to set them off as all the church and brunch eaters sat and watched. It was such a brilliant morning, we sat there and ate our amazing veggie omelette with home-made seasoned potatoes and gallo pinto (rice and beans mixed together) as a side, sipped our smoothies and then ordered another omelette, sharing just wasn't enough. It was a perfect start to the day and one that gave us energy to walk around and explore Granada all day. We checked out some of the museums, churches, squares and the lake side as well as a very enthusiastic local softball game. It was raining on and off but we had a great day and were enjoying Nicaragua already.
