Day 10 - El Calafate, Puerto Moreno Glacier and seniors day out
This was our last full day in Patagonia so there wasn't a better way to spend it than heading out to see a beautiful Glacier, Puerto Moreno Glacier. The weather was cloudy with a little rain but nothing we hadn't dealt with and overcome before.
After an hour on the bus we arrived in the national park and hopped on a boat to head out to get a closer view of the Glacier. This thing was enormous and so blue. It was however still hard to comprehend that this glacier was a quarter of the size of Glacier Viedma. The clouds were coming over and the wind was super fresh but we still stood outside the cabin, eyes fixed on this enormous wall of ice just waiting to hear a crack and see some fall into the water.
We were not disappointed. We both couldn't believe that what looked like such a small amount of ice falling off could make such a loud noise, or splash. The boat was pretty cool but we were ready to head back to the land to start walking around the 'balconies' or boardwalks to view both sides of the glacier.
We arrived at the balconies and realised it must have been seniors day. Glacier Puerto Moreno is obviously the "oldies" Argentinean equivalent to the Blue Mountains for a day out and about. Surrounded by rugged up nature enthusiasts we headed down to the very well set up walkways and signposts. The first route we took said that it was 1hr 15mins. Right, let's go. We headed down to the end of the water in awe of this enormous glacier in front of us, constantly hearing cracks deep inside.
We ended up back at the starting point within 20mins. A little surprised but still content we agreed that the time suggested must be tailored for the more "experienced" glacier visitors that day.
We shared our obligatory ham and cheese sandwich and watched the glacier begin to sparkle in the sun. The action was now about to start. All it needed was a little sun to get some of those cracks moving. The sound was enormous and beautiful at the same time. The sheets of ice looked so small but they would have been about the size of a car and made amazing splashes below. We were treated to not only this spectacular show but it also then began to snow. What a day.
Back on the bus and into El Calafate for an awesome chicken and veg stew to warm the bones, and another Mendoza Malbec. Another great day.
