It's a bright 25c today and we're off to Harajuku for some Kawaii overload, boys in shorts and everything. It's a lazy Sunday morning start after our late Saturday night, we're not at Tochamae until 11ish.
We come down the tunnel at Harajuku and find ourselves right in the doorstep to Takes***a St. Boo quickly points out you can only take one, not two, just one.
We don't even make it into the street before they eye off a plushy merch store that just has to be visited. This street is packed tight and full of weird stuff you don't see in most places. Massive platform sneakers, hundreds of sunnies in shapes I've never seen, colour combos that woukd convince you your eyes are failing. It's too much. Then it's good candy stores bursting with sugar insanity, ice cream, this street is sweet sweet sweet.
I convince everyone we should find a campsite then the girls can go shopping without the hurry up pressure. We cross the street to a much more refined design precinct, very nice. We have a stop to make a plan for the day and realise we're only just around the corner from Kiddyland and the Kawaii Monster Cafe, we're off for more Kawaii.
The Monster Cafe is insane, it's someone's crazy trip memory recreated in gloss and sugar. No normal food here - Boo's spaghetti is every colour you can imagine, Fid's burger is bright green, the beer comes in a long beaker, and Boo's desert looked like an explosion in a paint factory.
We leave the cafe and the coma begins, everyone is struggling. So much so that we only last an hour in Kiddyland. The pokemon section is underwhelming, but there's a new Disney section which the girls think more than makes up for the pittyful Pokemon section.
We're off to Yoyogi park via the Meiji-Jingu Shrine. The blood sugar spikes are easing, we stop for a drink in the park near the shrine and Boo discovers she's having a reaction to the metal in yesterday's Disney ring, she asks what it means if your skin turns green like this, Fid responds - "She's a Witch!"
At the Shrine the kids practice the cleansing ritual before we enter. There is already a new gate at the entrance and now most of the Shrine is cloaked as it receives its new copper roof. We stroll through the Forrest to find our way into Yoyogi park. It's meant to be a perfect Cherry blossom spot if we'd been here a week earlier - but today at 25c on a Sunday afternoon, it's the cities most popular picnic spot.
It's hard to tell if the rockers at the gates are really warring rival gangs or if it's just part of their game. They stand apart Red Hots on one side and The Strangers on the other, they all look deadly serious. As we walk into the park we're the salmon swimming up stream, thousands of people are pouring out of the park, but it's still full of thousands more enjoying the late afternoon.
A guy walks up, opens a pet carrier and lets out his meerkats, Boo loses it, we aren't allowed to leave until she pats one. We're in the park for a while before we decide to leave Shibuya for another day and head back to Takes***a st for Gab to finish some shopping and time to check out a Microbrewery around the corner.
Fid has developed a taste for Yakitori, he orders up Heart, Liver, Gizzard, meanwhile boo hits her second bowl of Edamame. 4 pints in Gab returns with a new backpack, very nice! The post lunch blood glucose drop must be corrected, we hit the desert bars on Takes***a st where Boo remembers the cotton candy store, she gets one of those multi colour arrangements of a love heart. It really is very clever.
We're about half way home when her sugar peak hits. it's relatively early for us, but her brain is firing like could design a Kawaii Cafe. She'll crash very soon from such a great height - we have to get her home before it happens in public!
