Monday 7th July ( cont) - On the same site as the unfinished mosque is the Mausoleum of Mohammed v. A relatively new construction - quite beautiful - guarded by horsemen at both wall entrances - and traditionally uniformed guards at doors. It looks on to the unfinished mosque - Old and new.
Next we walked through the Medina - all painted in the blue and white of the Mediterranean- and viewed the Bou Regreg River flowing in to the Atlantic- with thousands swimming ( Sunday and school holidays). Had mint tea in the Kasbah Oudaya then through a lovely garden which used to be for royals only. It seems the current king is very much “downsizing” his own residences ( they are becoming more accessible to public) at same time ensuring his name will live on - eg the Casablanca Mosque.
Then on to Meknes - arrived late aft to witness the market square - snake handlers, monkeys, ostriches, clothes, music, eateries - crazy!! Our Riad for the night is beautiful
