Thu 26th July 2012 - After quite a noisy night (the free camp was pretty close to the highway) we headed for Camooweal. A very small town located pretty close to the Qld/NT border. We free camped again by the lake - well it was called Lake Francis but I think in the wet it becomes a river and is then called Georgina River. Both names were on the sign at the bridge. Regardless of what it's name was, it was the most beautiful place to stay. The birdlife was just amazing! The weather was lovely and warm if you managed to get out of the wind.
Fri 27th July 2012. Reluctantly we left the lake and continued on into NT. We travelled about 390km today to our next free camp at 41 Creek Bore. This was more off the highway.
Sat 28th July 2012. Well we have travelled 4,310 km since leaving Cattai. Heading now to Devil's Marbles. The sky is so blue and the sun is out but this cold wind keeps on blowing!! In fact at the Barkley Homestead yesterday the wind took hold of a lady's door as she was getting out to refuel and buckled it. She was travelling alone with her two boys so DB went to the rescue and did some minor panel beating for her. There's nothing really out here of much importance. It's just people passing through on their way to somewhere else. The free camps really are a great thing for those that are self sufficient - as we are. I think they caravan parks are going to have to take a good long look at what they can do to attract the people. Some have free wi-fi or pools etc. The reason we use the parks every now and then is when it's wash day for clothes or hair. Although I did wash my hair under the outside shower at Richmond. That, though, was about 33 degrees out - not this bloody chilly wind blowing. Brrr!! At Camooweal, they have a population of only 310 people and the best free camp by the lake where we stayed. Yet in town they have 2 caravan parks. One had only 1 van there and the other had about 3. Everyone else was at the lake - for free. We arrived at Devil's Marbles and were just amazed at their beauty. These huge boulders just seem to be balancing on each other. The place is apparently quite significant to the aboriginal women and once you visit it, you can understand why. We camped at the Devil's Marbles Campground which was $6.60 for the night and out of the wind (a little).
Sun 29th July - Once we left Devil's Marbles there was a whole lot of nothing again on the road. It can get quite boring at times so I think it's important to break the journey and stretch the legs. We drove about 200 km today to Ti-Tree Roadhouse and checked in to the carvan park. Time for a shower and freshen up!!! We are off to Alice Springs and surrounds tomorrow. So far though, I do find the Queensland outback more interesting that the outback here.
