Thanks to the cool stylists at Toni & Guy Bangkok, I am officially blonde again! Our first few days in the city have been lots of fun, we've been hanging out with the cool Thai kids in Siam Sq, where the fashion rivals anything London has to offer. The clothes here are amazing, cool little indy designers & lots of vintage, I just wish I wasn't on a backpackers salary or I'd have bought it all! It's a total contrast to India where there is no fashion whatsover! The Thai girls are so cool, all wearing cute shift dresses & city shorts - its actually wierd to see girls with flesh on show & I drastically need to update my capsule wardrobe again, as my conservative India clothes are so outdated here!
The Koh San Rd was exactly like I imagined, like the West End of Ibiza with slightly less vomit. Of course, I drank way too much Thai Whisky on the first night & was hungover for 2 days - lethal stuff. It was a good place to hang for one night, but the hotels on the strip are way too expensive, so the following day we tried to move in our hungover state & ended up doing a tour of the skankiest guesthouses ever, straight out of the opening scenes of The Beach. Finally, we found a decent place not far from Koh San & we also managed to sniff out some v.cool Thai bars in the process. Hidden Gems! One of which was a 100 year old traditional Thai house with an ornate garden & the inside decked out like a Berlin squat bar; the other was a 3 story mod bar with 60's decor, pool tables & a beautiful rooftop terrace! Baz you would be impressed!
It's not all been good though... it's v.hard to be a vegetarian here, unlike India & the food has been a bit hit & miss for me, as I keep getting served chicken! And the people have so much attitude - I got shouted at by a Thai women for accidently standing on a pair of trousers whilst trying them on! I wouldnt have minded if they were Stella McCartney, but they were a 100 baht pair of fishermans trousers (no, I didnt buy them & yes, what was I thinking?!) silly cow! No one would dare speak to you like that in India especially if they wanted you to buy something! Oh & I am officially FAT here, I am a size Extra Large in Thai clothes! I knew I'd eaten a lot of Masala Dosas in India, but I didnt think I'd put on that much weight! Horrific!
So the verdict on Bangkok, is that whilst it is uber cool & good for home comforts like haircuts & Boots cosmetics, is that it just isn't India! It seems to be lacking something. The problem is that it is just too like the West & has all the attitude that goes with it! So Mumbai is staying my number one city for now, but that's not to say I wont be going back for more in Bangkok, I do have a whole new wardrobe to buy afterall! Now we're up North in Chiang Mai getting ready for some serious trekking, so hopefully that will burn off some of my newly found pounds, so by the time I return to Bangkok, I should at least be able to fit into a Medium!
