Last port and last day of the cruise. Looks like it is going to be a hot day, so what better way to spend it than in a winery?? Up at 7am for breakfast in Blu. Sat in the restaurant watching the entry into Montevideo. Docked at 8am and then once the jetty was down we disembarked at 9am . Had a brief walk around the shops close to the port and saw local people setting up their market stalls to attract the cruise passengers. Back to the tourist office for pick up at 10am by our driver from Pizzorno Wines. We were joined by Kirby, a lady from Dallas. Took us about 40 mins to get to Pizzorno which is on the outskirts of Montevideo. Uruguay is home to approx 3.5M people of which 1.7M live in Montevideo. We were greeted by Lucio at Pizzorno with a glass of Sparkling White. Very nice and very refreshing. Our guide then took us a walk around the vines and then into the production facility. Pizzorno has 21 hectares under vine and produces 180,000 bottles a year. Grapes are a mix mostly Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and some local grapes as blending grape. We saw how the red they produced is put into Oak Casks from both the USA and France with a recent addition being Casks from Eastern Europe!! We then went back to the tasting room to try Sauvignon Blanc, A Tannat that had been processed using Maceration technique which made it very fruity and smelled of strawberries, raspberries and a faint smell of bananas. We really enjoyed it. Then we had a Tannat Reserva which is a year I Oak barrels and then a year in the bottle. Again nice but more purple fruits and a stronger tannin We had smoked salmon, steak and then ice cream for lunch and tasted a Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, went well with the steak. Finally with the ice cream they served a sparking Pinot Noir Rose. All in all a very good day and a winery we would recommend. Back to the ship, little bit of gift shopping, back on board to pack as they are taking our luggage this evening. Off to the sunset bar for a last beer, martini bar for a last cocktail and then dinner in Blu
