So yesterday we had the worst journey so far, we left Koh Tao and headed for Krabi. Its about 500km and it was a day time trip, it took us about 12 and a half hours in total... not great!
First up was an hour boat ride to Koh Pha-ngan where we changed our rapid catameran for a sloper, more dodgy looking one! It was then a two and a half hour ride to the mainland. When we got to Surrat Thani we had to get on a coach for an hour which took us to our little bus station. We waited here for another hour for our bus to Krabi. The first one to roll up was a big, comfortable coach with air-conditioninmg and toilets... but, it wasnt ours. That was headed for bangkok. Then behind it, in trundled our 'coach'... Oh dear. It was essentially an oversised baked bean can with wheels and a motor strapped to it. It looked at least 25 years old! Tom and I causiously clambered aboard not knowing what to expect. As we did, the bus driver gave us a demented smile as if to say, you wont survive this.
It was probably the worst 4 and a half hours of my life... There was no airconditioning, no toilet and no seatbelts, and of course, the driver was a grade A nutjob... In his rule book, traffic lights, giving way and staying on your side of the road are all strickly optional!!! it was terrifying, the speed at which he went round corners and hairpin bends was nuts! the bus was lurching this way and that! he would just migrate to the other side of the road whenever he felt like and and the engine constantly sounded like it would explode!
After that terrifying near death experience we finally arrived at what could only be described as someones back garden, there was just a tent pitched up and that was it! Off drove the bus and we were left looking like lemons! Luckily there was a lady to help us get a taxi (in the loosest sense possible)
But finally after nearlly 13 hours of travelling we got to our hostel. We were tired and hungry and wanted to go to our room. Thankfully there was a very friendly and upbeat host waiting for us. He told us all the standard rooms were full so he would get us an airconditioned one for the same price! It was luxury!! it was so nice to be in such a great room after all that time! It had a floor to celing glass door across the whole of the front and a shower that did hot and cold, not just freezing!! It was great all round, comfy beds, nice AC, even a mini fridge with cold water waiting for us! We decided to head into Ao-Nang which is a little sea side town with a big market. It was pretty cool and we found a good place to eat but we were just ready for bed really!
Today we left early for Koh Phi Phi and a tame 2 hour boat journey later we were here!! Its now just gone 1.00 in the afternoon and I'm ready for the beach! From the photo you can see where im headed! The rocks are amazing here, I don't know what it's made from but they are stunning! Clear water with lots of fish as we stepped off the boat too!!
Aurevoir!
