Thailand has so many islands...which one to see first? Life I'd tough right now. I chose Koh Tao because I wanted to do my scuba diving course before I ran out of time. I am so glad I did it and I had a couple great teachers who really went through everything at the right pace to keep it very fun and comfortable.
There was lots of theory and it felt like I was back in a high school course with so much to be learned. After much of the theory, we were on to the pool to learn the essentials of diving. The hardest part and I am saying this even after diving four times was kneeling in the pool trying to get used to breathing underwater. It's a completely new feeling that takes a little time to get used to but just like riding a bike, once you got it you got it. For example, some of the skills I did was filling up my mask with water and removing the water, taking the mask off and replacing it and taking the regulator out of my mouth and breathing with it only half in my mouth.
This is probably the proudest moment I've been in my trip was completing this course including the dives, theory and skills underwater. For someone who had trouble swimming 200 meters without s break, diving for close to an hour underwater felt like a huge accomplishment. Highlights of the dive included hundreds of different kinds of fish, the coral and the stingray.
After a day of relaxation, I went snorkeling to Shark Bay. The name is for real. Over the two dives, my buddy Keld and I saw at least fifty reef sharks and we followed a sea turtle for about ten minutes as well. This was really cool but a little nerve racking as well. The trick to seeing the sharks was to squeeze an empty water bottle under water and it attracted them to the sound. Once they circled us below we stopped making the sound. Another guy that we shared the trick with never stopped making the sound and a baby reef shark actually surfaced and went for a bite of the water bottle. He's alright so now it just makes for a funny story!
