Our Practice Run for Retirement
It was a quick trip from Corpus to San Antonio. The Admiralty RV park was nice with well spaced sites and cement slabs. They even showed us to our site and helped us with positioning. The park was pretty well located for us to visit the city and actually right across the street from Sea World (which we didn't visit).
The weather was agreeable, so we spent a lot of time two wheeling - both pedaled and motorized. San Antonio has a great bike and walking trail system (about 45 miles in total). We rode 2 of the longest: the Mission Trail and the Leon Creek Greenway. The Mission Trail runs along the river and connects the 4 Franciscan Missions. They are in various states of restoration and each use to be its own small town. All four are within 7 miles of each other, so it is interesting that they had separate communities so close together. Of course, 7 miles is a lot farther on foot or horse back then it is today. Another day we rode the Leon Creek Greenway. It was a well-maintained trail through a conversation area. We had packed a lunch and saw a family of deer along the trail. Good workout too, at least for me. Not so much for Bill.
I found us a great motorcycle route up to Kerrville with some excellent twisty roads and even some hills, especially the section of Hwy 16 between Kerrville and Bandera. It was a 5-hour trip including stops for lunch and gas but it was so much fun we did it twice.
We also visited the River Walk twice, once in the daytime and once at night. It was especially beautiful at night with 1 million twinkling Christmas lights hung from the trees and all along the walk. They even had carolers in the riverboats too. It is lovely.
It was cool to see the Alamo again. It had been about 15 years since I had been there. It is very well done with nice grounds and if you like old guns...this is the place for you (once again Bill liked it a little more than I did).
We took advantage of the San Antonio Museum of Art during their free hours (which is definitely worth a visit), wandered the Japanese Tea Garden (which was basically closed for the winter), and took some more free country-dance lessons. Bill’s getting better but is over analyzing it (big surprise). Still a lot of fun. This time we also found salsa lessons and got a refresher.
Bill snagged tickets to a free advance showing of The Hobbit – Battle of Five Army’s. Seating was first come, so we arrived an hour before the show and were still 200 back in the line. We managed to get some pretty good seats and the movie was great. Also a must see.
Last weekend we visited a farmers market, which was a little disappointing. We bought some pastries from a stand, La Panaderia, and they were fantastic so we looked up their location and went there for lunch and more pastries. It was excellent and well priced. The sandwiches and soup were too much and it was so good we went to Walmart and bought a cooler and some ice so we could keep it while we did some Christmas shopping. After shopping we went to the dollar movie and saw The Good Lie. Another great movie if you have not seen it. When we got back to the truck we discovered we had been ROBBED. It appears Bill left the truck unlocked, and as you might imagine, the dollar theater is not in the best part of town. Fortunately for us the thieves were very selective. They took some toys we bought for Hunter, and our cooler of La Panaderia leftovers and our pastries. BOO! Thankfully, they left the rest of our Christmas gift purchases, our iPad, Bill's expensive kites, our sunglasses, my wallet with gift cards in it, and a bit of cash. Bill says we fed some needy people. A good thing to do after watching that particular movie.
The past 6 weeks have been great and we’ve had a lot of fun but we are looking forward to heading home to see the family. Seeing Hunter during FaceTime calls has been good but I can’t wait to pick him up and hug him.
