Bikepacker's South American Adventure
Colonia del Sacramento was founded in 1680. I will spare you the history lesson but it was pretty cool to see this Unesco Heritage site. The Spanish and Portuguese influence is clear as it should be after all the fighting they did over this town. there were plenty of history lessons, stories and of course lots of walking. the old cobbled streets are mostly free of traffic.
On the drive in (I took and actual guided tour for one) we stopped at Hotel Nirvana for morning cafe con leche. Nirvana it was, with a big ole pool sitting there all blue, sparkly and empty. It was torture to not hop in and swim a few laps! Beautiful place though, apparently it is a resort destination for Uruguayans.
All in all it was worth the trip to Colonia. Topped the day off with selling my new bike before I even started the ride! Nice. It is nice to know that "Winner"will have a good home to go to once I am finished the trip. Even nicer not having to box up my own bike and schlepping it through all the airports. There is something to be said for the simplicity of just getting a bike at the destination. Well, ask me that again at the end of the week when I may well be desperatetly missing my 27 gears!
Time to pack up and get ready for the ride. It has been nice having Internet access here but Ihave no idea how much I will find once I leave Montevideo.

Elisabeth Thanks for sharing Diane. While I love to travel, I can't do it all the time, so it is fun to follow you on this trip! Looking forward to the rest of your trip.
