Friday 25th
The days are flying by and I seem to have lost track of the time, but back to Tuesday which turned out to be a very wet miserable day therefore we did not go on any of the tours but stayed on the boat and relaxed, overnight the ship sailed from Rudesheim to Miltenberg which is a medieval town that has become a time capsule and has retained a lot of the half timbered houses, the streets are cobbled with a lot of quaint little shops and cafes, a very pretty town and I just wandered around until it was time to walk back to the ship, which departed at 3pm for Warzburg which was once again an overnight sailing.
Wednesday 24th
This morning we woke up to vine-clad hills and church steeples and arriving in Warzburg you immediately see a massive fortress called "Marienberg" which was once the bishops castle, but this one is not opened to the public at all. but in the town is the "New Prince Bishop Palace" this is now declared a world heritage site, and we did take this tour, the palace is magnificient, it is a baroque palace and one of the largest in Germany, room after room is decadent and each room is grander than the last, until you come to the painted mirror room (the last room on the tour) wow! the gold leaf smacks you right in the eyes, the mirrors are not actually mirrors as we know them but glass that is painted on the other side of the glass and the technique that was used makes it look like mirrors, very overwhelming and a sensory overload, it was a relief to leave the room and enter the exit room which was very ordinary but calming, unfortunately no photos are allowed to be taken within the rooms or palace itself,. once leaving the palace you are able to enter the chapel and this also was gold leaf overload, then a walk in the gardens, which as we see in photos were beautiful.
Finally as the palace is within the town it is a few minutes walk into the city central, once again some did shopping or just sat at a cafe and watched the locals, I just wanderd around finally ending up in the market square where all sorts of produce and flowers were to be bought.
Once again walking back to the ship and sailing to Kitzingen which is about 5 hours down the river and berthing for a guided tour of Germany's oldest wine bar for wine tasting, but I headed for bed and overnight the ship sailed for Bamberg.
