Well, I'm actually now in Bangkok after a fantastic couple of weeks on the islands - Koh Tao and Koh Phangnan. Since my last blog I've spent another week or so at the vets which I loved - I graduated to blowdarting and netting stray dogs in order to neuter them which was fun, and worlds away from work experience in England! Tim arrived last Thursday from England, so I spent a few days showing him the island - eating at restaurants on stilts over the sea, drinking at beach bars, and generally enjoying the island living! We found some stunning beachy coves which were only accessible by quad bike, and we had a few rather hairy journeys, but it all added to the fun! After a few days enjoying Koh Tao, I said bye to all my new friends and dogs on the island, and we got the ferry over to Koh Phangan, the party capital of Thailand. Unfortunately we missed the black moon party by a day, but we figured we'd have our own party when we found somewhere with some bars - oh how mistaken we were! We landed at the pier late afternoon, and were taken to some bungalows, supposedly on Ban Tai - a beach we'd been reccommended, but when we got there, we were two minutes away from the pier on a grotty seaweed covered beach - Tim would disagree - but then he'd swim in any sea! We decided, possible unwisely, since our decision was based on the advice of a English drunk wearing a t-shirt saying "everything's brilliant in Leeds', and a half naked old man who was drugged up to the eyeballs, to go to an area in the North East of the island - Pan Noi - paradise according to our Leeds travel advisor. We ordered a taxi, and arranged for it to pick us up from the sky sports bar - much to Tim's delight. However we couldn't find said bar, and noone in the area had heard of it. We wandered around with our backpacks for quite a while before the taxi finally found us. We travelled in the back of a truck for about an hour down a very dusty dirt track - bouncing all over the place, to our resort, which we arrived at covered in dust and with rather bruised bottoms! We got a nice bungalow 10 seconds from the sea, on a gorgeous white sandy beach. There were plenty of bars, and restaurants, and we went out for a very nice dinner of fresh BBQd fish - which set us back about 20 quid - this place is not as cheap as it used to be! The next day we spent by the pool and in the sea, and discovered that nice as this place is, they really aren't very helpful when it comes to leaving, doing any tours or even going to the next beach - we were pretty much trapped there until we wanted to go back to the main pier, but we made the most of it, and decided to have a night on the cocktails, which was very nice until about 9pm, when all the bars closed! Party Island indeed! The pace of life was just so slow it was almost backward, which was nice to a point, but got quite frustrating when you wanted to get anything done! Anyway, after a 15 hour ferry and bus journey, which cost us about 25 quid each - (get me back to Malaysia!) we arrived in Bangkok, shattered, as the bus was not, as we'd been sold, a VIP bus, but just a very normal, if slightly more cramped than normal coach! Not impressed!Anyway, we're now off to find a hostel in Bangkok......
