Travelling with all of your belongings is advisable. Walking through Kuala Lumpur airport arrival doors to get a bus to the train station without our rucksacks was probably and hopefully the most forgetful thing I have and will do (fingers crossed). It took 2 hours to get to the place we were staying, Matahari hostel in Pasar Seni, from the airport but we made it and, my God, it was amazing! Whoever says Kuala Lumpur is not worth stopping at, should not be listened to!
Our room, well, was literally a bunk bed with half a meter of space around the outside of it, but it was a lovely little find with a very helpful owner. There were no tuk tuks, no bikes and very few motorbikes, we were in civilization….this was however very dangerous for our excited little bodies. On our first night we ate dinner in China town, this was of course after looking around the markets which were not far from our hostel, then we caught the train to see the amazing Patronas towers (twin towers). Hiding inside these towers was a huggggeee shopping centre. I couldn't quite believe it. I had been four months without a proper shop, and for those who know me, I think I have coped pretty well. I couldn't take it all in. I gulped. Looked to my left and the words 'Topshop' glowed a magical colour. TOPSHOP!!!!!!!!! Yes I had a fit in front of many many people and they probably thought I was crazy. I was like a kid in a toy shop. But I resisted buying anything (I'll save it till I'm back home - this was, however, a very hard choice to make). Sierra and I then looked up at the 6 storey mall and the word 'cinema' stuck out like a sore thumb. Did we go? Oh yes we did! It made a change from watching movies on our tiny computers lying on our beds with oreos and ahoy cookies and milo hot choccy. We watched 'What to Expect When You're Expecting' with the nicest popcorn I've ever had, and well, nobody and nothing could wipe the smiles off our faces….we did attract a bit of attention with our scale of excitement. Oops!
The next day, after over-sleeping due to the darkness of our cave-like room, we took the train and climbed 272 steps which lead us to the religious and magnificent Batu Caves. Monkeys, aggressive at that, surrounded pretty much the whole area. Those who fed them were crazy. The view of KL standing behind the golden statue was stunning but a phobia for monkeys became apparent, ha! We then headed for the central market, back near to our hostel to eat and do some more shopping. That evening we went back to see the Patronas towers from a different angle….from a rooftop bar. We got a stunning view, and stunning pictures, however with the cocktails being over 8 dollars, when we were used to paying under 2, we headed back down to the music and light festival which was happening in the park below the towers. We ended the night at a local reggae bar with pizza and cocktails. Would I go back? Yes but with an empty suitcase purely to fill it with the fake handbags and purses.
