Beth and Clare's Big Adventure
Hey Everyone,
Hope you're all doing goooood! This is just a little postcard to tell you of our little three day adventure on Fraser Island which we've just come back from. For those of you who don't know what Fraser Island is (which was me too-having never heard of it before!) it's a cool little island off Hervey Bay made completely of Sand with amazing lakes and shipwrecks-not to mention a vast number of wild and ferocious dogs called dingos (a little threat to visitors lives just to add to the excitement!). We hired a 4x4 along with 6 other people and all 10 of us explored the island for three days, camping on the beach both nights with the elements (and DOGS!). Luckily for us we had a highly amusing bunch of people. Minutes before jumping into the vehicle and heading off to the island we discovered our designated drivers may not be the best choice since one was an alcolholic yankie who was still drunk from the night before and refused to drive and the other was a huge Dutch dude who spoke limited English and had never driven a manual car before! Great! However, Arnie (as he came to be called coz he was a bit of a legend and very built!) turned out to be a quick learner and we were soon on track.
Highlights included us getting stuck in very deep sand (numerous times) and then finding our car was so damn lame that we couldnt even push it out as the back door was jammed and wouldnt open so we couldn't even get out! And nearly tipping the car (which was very top heavy) as Arnie got a bit too confident behind the wheel and took us on a slight diversion along an assault course! But we got to the other side unscathed! Yay! All meals were a huge achievement and made all the tastier for the large amount of sand that always managed to make its way into our food. Visited Lake McKenzie which has to be the prettiest lake I've ever seen, and saw a shipwreck which was also pretty impressive.
We were also very brave and ventured upto the north of the island to Indian Head where we were hoping to spot whales and dolphins. But yet again we found ourselves stuck in very deep sand. But fortunately some stranger who obviously took pity on us offered to tow us using his far more impressive monster truck! However Karen the yankie, being the bright spark that she is left the hand brake on (as she did many a time despite being a Mechanical Engineer!) and no matter how hard we all pushed and how hard the truck pulled, our little vehicle wouldnt budge. Wasn't until we smelt the burning rubber that everyone realised why! But by some miracle of God we got our deposit back on the car. Phew!
All in all though we all had a great time and got some fab piccies, so go check them out. Next adventure is the Whitsundays in a few days time, and we'll be sure to write you all a postcard to let you know how it was. Hope you're all having fun and for anyone whose doing exams at the mo, we wish you loads and loads of luck and hope you kick some serious academic ass!
Miss you all loads and thank you for all your messages, we love them. Will write again soon.
Loads of Love
