Leaving Dublin behind we drove west across the country through sheep, dairy and thorough-bred breeding areas.
First stop was Galway and we immediately travelled along the shores of Galway Bay. Although it was drizzling and freezing, we braved the elements and strolled through the town centre and stumbled into a genuine old traditional Irish pub. At least it was dry and warm and sustenance was available. Afterwards we did the tourist thing and did some shopping before heading out of Galway bound for Bunratty Castle.
We did a walking tour of the medieval Bunratty Castle originally built about 1000 AD and rebuilt in the 15th century. A small village has also been built complete with thatched roof dwellings, stables and animal keeps all set up as a working museum.
A quick change and back on the coach to be chauffeured to dinner and traditional Irish entertainment - singing and dancing (Ceilidh) - in Limerick on the banks of the Shannon River. It was an excellent night with a few of us learning to play the spoons and we were taught a simple Irish jig.
Tomorrow we're off to the Ring of Kerry and Cork.
Today's Insights:
The Galway Catholic Church (Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and Saint Nicholas) has been visited by JF Kennedy and Ronald Regan.
The Shannon River is the British Isles' longest river.
It only rains in Ireland twice a week - once for 3 days and the other for 4.
