Wow, if you thought the traffic in Hanoi was bad......Saigon's is like Hanoi's but on steroids!! There are simply millions of motorbikes - morning, noon and night - sounding like a swarm of honeybees. You could easily spend a few hours sitting in a cafe while watching "the strange choreography of vehicular ballet" taking place outside!
(Note: on the flight here from Denang, I met the first person in the world that DIDN'T know how to undo her seatbelt!!! People like that shoudn't be allowed out without supervision)!!!
The highlights here were the Reunification Palace (think of the famous images of when Communist tanks crashed through the gates back in April 1975, marking the end of the Republic of Vietnam - which over 58,000 American soldiers had died trying to save). It is also very 1960s in it's design which you either love or hate I guess!
The War Remnants museum was also very good. I've been here before, but the power of the images on display (and the stories behind some of those pictures) cannot fail to move you.
And of course, a visit to Saigon wouldn't be complete without a trip to the famous Chu Chi Tunnels. At it's height, it consisted of over 250km of tunnels, parts of which were several stories deep and included trap doors, living areas, storage facilities, weapons factories, hospitals and kitchens!
Even though some parts have been widened for the benefit of us "fat" Westerners, the tunnels still feel unbelievably claustrophobic and extremely hot - how the Vietnamese were able to stay down there of days (sometimes weeks) at a time is simply staggering!
