This is an area just outside of Guilin that is famous for it's rice terraces. Being the independent travellers that we are, we decided against going on an
organised tour. Instead, we decided to make our own way there by using public transport.
I still question this decision to this day!!
It took us over 4 hours to get there! The first bus circled around Guilin until it was full - that was one hour! Then we missed our stop (but luckily got on another bus coming the other way)! This new bus then stopped in a small town called Heping, again waiting until it was full before proceeding (not just full of people but also live chickens and huge bags of rice)! We then had to change to a minibus (after initially being told they weren't going) before we FINALLY made it!!!! Phew!
After all that, the terraces were slightly disappointing! We must have just missed a harvest because everything looked brown (and not lush green as per the photos in Lonely Planet), plus it started to rain!
We only had about 90 mins there before we started the journey back. This was much easier - only two buses, and no chickens. Still took 3 hours though!!!!
