Korcula
14th - 15th April 2010
We arrived into Vela Luka (Small town on the other side of the island of Korcula) around 4, and then it was an hour on the bus to go to other side of island (To Korcula Town). We had very vague directions on how to get to the hostel, and ended up circling main tower before some woman stopped us and asked if we were looking for her place - we were.
We got settled in the room before heading out in search of somewhere to eat dinner. We'd covered the entire town in about 25 minutes, but most of the restaurants were closed. On approach of one of the rare open restaurants I got attacked by a pit bull type dog. It had a real good go at my thigh (Lucky I was still wearing my jeans from the scootering that morning), thankfully it only broke the skin in 2 places, but I ended up with a really nasty bruise (Which has only now, 3 weeks later, disappeared). The owners of the dog made a really poor effort to get the dog off me, and then failed to apologise. a*******s.
We limped off back up to the restaurant that was pretty much underneath our apartment. It was a pleasant evening so we sat outside in one of the stone alleyways, which cover the whole town. It was a fairly pricey place (By Croatian standards) but I thoroughly enjoyed my schnitzel with mushrooms and Dan loved his mixed grill.
When back at the apartment we got chatting to the one other guest. An Australian woman, maybe in her 40's, who'd decided to up and leave her life in Perth and relocate to Korcula. She'd never been to Korcula or even Croatia before, spoke none of the language, but was in the process of finding a house to buy.
We spent the rest of the evening watching some TV on the laptop before going to bed!
We had a bit of a sleep in the next morning before spending the day looking through the town where they claim Marko Polo was born. The old town is circular, set around the big church and all the buildings and alleyways are made of stone: Very nice. Mainland Croatia is visible across the small stretch of water.
We had a long lunch at a waterfront pizzeria. We were amused by the waiter who cracked the s***s at a group of Spanish cruise boat tourists who ordered their drinks and pizza's and less than 5 minutes later told him to hurry up as they only had 5 minutes until the boat departed. He gave them a stern talking to and told them that next time they should go to a fast food place instead of wasting his time. They never got lunch!
We tried to work off our pizzas after lunch with a long walk along the coast. It was a lovely day to just walk along the road next to the water. After we'd walked an adequate distance we turned and headed back for town before picking up some Danish's and enjoying them at the waterside.
We had a relax for an hour in the afternoon at the apartment (This is when we also read a nice article on a news website about some planes not flying anymore because of some Volcano in Iceland… Ahh we're not leaving for ages, that won't affect us!) before heading out again for dinner at a nearby pizza restaurant. When we got to the restaurant we were told by the nice waitress that they weren't serving about 80% of the dishes on the menu, but we were able to happily pick without being worried. Dan had pork medallions on skewers while I had more Čevapčići with awesome Mediterranean rice and veggies.
After dinner it was off to bed as we had a really early start the next morning.
