For our first stop on the east coast of Vietnam we decided to go to Quy Nhon, a small quiet fishing town that doesn't really have much of a tourist scene. However, as it was off the tourist trail it was a bit of a trek to get to. Firstly we got the overnight bus from Saigon to Nha Trang, which would have been ok had we not been forced off the big bus into a tiny minivan at 2am. The driver also seemed to need to keep his music on constantly which didn't help, but we didn't dare to ask him to turn it off incase it was the only thing keeping him awake. So, we arrived in Nha Trang bleary eyed and knackered at 6am. After a quick bite to eat we caught another minibus to Quy Nhon and ended up sitting cramped on top of other peoples suitcases right at the back! 18 hours later we finally made it :)
Although Quy Nhon didnt really offer much to do, it was just what we needed. We found a very reasonable hotel with a balcony looking out over the beach and pretty much spent our two days chilling out, enjoying the peace and quiet...lack of motorbikes, dogs barking, touts shouting at us etc! There were lots of restaurants by the beach offering fresh seafood caught that day. None of the menus were in english so we just had to guess what we were ordering with the help of LPs less-than-helpful dictionary and some cartoon pictures that the waitress showed us. On our first night we did really well, ending up with some seafood fried rice (shrimp, crab and squid) and two GIANT prawns the size of my hand! It was so delicious we decided to order the exactly the same on our second night... or so we thought. Somehow we ended up with 12 grilled prawns, fried rice with prawns and another two giant prawns!! Definately something fishy going on...
