We arrived in Kanchanaburi early in the morning and went to find a guest house. We stayed in a very small bamboo hut over looking the river that came with its on Gecko and toad! Although it was rather compact it would be fine for a couple of nights. Kanchanburi is home to the Bridge over the River Kwai which was spectacular everytime we looked at it. The Bridge is still in use today and you can walk or take the train across it. On the first day we walked across and the bridge and visted the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre gave us a comprehensive introduction into the history of the line and was on the of the best museums we had seen so far. We also to see one of the war cemetries, spent the afternoon wandering around the small town and booked a tour for the following day.
That evening Lucy and my good friend Mr Gecko were constantly bickering as he invaded our bedroom. The Gecko made a hellish noise all evening a kept poor Lucy awake for several hours. To Lucy's annoyance I can now do a perfect impression of the Gecko which constantly reminds her of that traumatic night.
Our Tour guide was called Cin and she had just left University and was working as a guide in order to improve her English. Firstly we visited a waterfall which was full of Thai people swimming. The waterfall was very pretty but not as impressived as the one we had previously seen in the Laos. Next we went to Hellfire Pas which followed the route of the eighteen metre deep cutting that the POWs were forced to create for the train route. It was rather eerie walking along the pass knowing that thousands of people had died along this route. The afternoon was spent at a hot spring which was hot hot hot!!! Finally we caught the train back to the town where we were again able to see some spectacular landscape whilst riding over the famous bridge.
We did not know what to expect of Kanchanaburi and had not planned on visiting here. On reflection we were glad that we did, aside from the towns main sights, there were some excellent bars and restaurants and it provided us with an interesting trip before we headed back to Bangkok to meet the younger Shallcross sister and co.
