So, after our long bus journey we arrived in Buenos Aires, and in league with some others from our bus we managed to negotiate the subway with our rucksacks and find our hostel. Spent a few hours lolling around waiting for our dorm to be ready to check in to, then decided to go wander and find some of the sights. We walked to the obelisk, Puerto Madero, and the famous Casa Rosada where Evita made her speeches in the Plaza de Mayo.
On Friday we headed on the subway to the district of Palermo to visit the Evita museum, which was pretty good and had most the information in English as well as Spanish. After that we walked a pretty mammoth distance to the Recoletta cemetery, which is a totally unique place. All the graves are like little houses, so the place is like a town with alleyways and blocks of houses. Some are quite rundown, whilst others are really lavish with huge sculptures and stuff. Evita is buried there in her family tomb, and it wasn´t too hard to find with the other tourists swarmed round it! That night we had some steak and red wine.....when in Argentina!
On Saturday we had a lazy morning and then headed back to Palermo as it was a really nice day, and we sat in one of the big parks enjoying the warmth that had been missing in New Zealand! In the evening we were picked up for our tango evening, something Ben may protest he did not want to do, but secretly he was excited. We first had a 45 minute lesson, which was fun though there were a lot of people in a fairly small studio so it was a bit cramped! We then moved into the theatre where we had a three course meal and then we watched a professional tango show. The show was fantastic, and made our attempts in the lesson seem more than pitiful! It was a fun evening, great to see some tango Argentinian style.
On Sunday we jumped on a bus to the area of La Boca, and went on a tour round the Boca stadium where the famous Boca Juniors play football. Obviously I couldn´t have told you any of this before we went as I´m pretty clueless about football, but I actually found the tour really enjoyable. It´s pretty funny how much they worship Maradona, to the point that you can have your photo taken with lookalikes in the street.
From here we walked just a few streets back into the heart of La Boca, where the buildings are painted bright colours and there are tango dancers and painters in the street. We had some lunch and a bit of a stroll before catching the bus back to the hostel.
Monday was our final day in the capital, and we walked to the congres building before doing various little things like going to the post office. We had an evening bus to Iguazu, which turned out to be our nicest bus so far...
