Here we are in Munich!
Arrived here rather late from Grunau - there was quiter a bit of traffic somewhere after Salzburg and it was well past 5pm. Dinner time for many! The bus driver (CJ) was going with a group of people to the local Beer Hall I should mention there's a beer hall/garden on almost every corner here so it's not difficult to find a drink. So a group of aussies, myself, some canadians and of course CJ set off in search of some grub.
Upon arrival the hall was in full swing, Beer maids carrying up to 12 glasses at a time. These are no small glasses by the way. Beer only comes in 1L's here, so as you can imagine, it's quite spectacular to watch. The sound of Bavarian men playing brass instruments is drowned out by the smash of plates and chink of glassware, it's alsmost as if they're in competition to see who can be louder. It's a close call.
I'll briefly explain the photo, this is me, drinking one of those famous 1L beers - by the look of it I think it's my second... maybe third.. But it didn't matter, I was in Munich and I was with great comapny and I was going to enjoy myself! Even got theire famous pork knuckle to accompany my beer. In Munich they're famous for their pork knuckle. Yes I did go on about it in Berlin but here is So. Much. Better! They crisp the skin to perfection and the potato dumplings are to die for. Maybe it was just the whole atmosphere that made it so much more special. They say the way in which you experience something can change it completely. So true.
There's more to do in Munich though than just get sloshed at the local beer hall. You can also get sloshed at the hostel bar. It's usually cheaper there as well! But honestly there loads to do. There is a palace just near the centre of the city. A nudist park that's apparently 2 tiems bigger than central park in NYC - happily avoided this one. And you can take a 2 hour train ride to the castle Walt Disney based his off! This is what I did one day and I have to say it was a pretty spectacular fail. Nearly half the castle was covered in scaffolding! Didn't stop me from humming "When you wish upon a star" as I was walking toward it!
The people are friendly, the beer is cheap and the food is great. I loved Munich so damn much I'm even going again durin Oktoberfest! Awful I know.
