The only reason we decided to go to Melaka was because we wanted to go somewhere inbetween KL and Singapore. Amy and Harry had already been an tols us loads about it so thats were we headed plus it was only 2 hours by bus. We had been told to stay at some really wierd guesthouse run by a guy named Alan.
Weird he was. We were told to find the street the guesthouse was on and look for closed up blue doors. Harry had told us that when they arrived the guy answered the door and pretty much interogated them, if he thought they were ok he would let them in and have a room. We were lucky though, Harry had already emailed him to let him no we would be arriving but it was still odd. We knocked on these blue doors and Alan poked his head around, he was suprised when we knew his name but soon realised it was us and welcomed us in. He told us to drop our bags and make ourselfs at home while he sorted out 'miss germany'. We soon learnt that rather than learning names he randomly named people where they were from so we were the brit couple, there was a mr Japan, mr scouser and so on. It was the wierdist place. It lookied more like someones garage. At one end a desk were Alan sat a sofa, and a few chairs were everyone else was sat. That was it, there were about 3 private rooms upstairs and then loads of bunks but no doors it was all open plan. The toilet was at the back of the courtyard and that was it.
We paid him for the room and he took us around and told us all the rules for example if you snore you will be woken up, if you rustle carrier bags in the night he would nail you and if you left your tea or coffe mug around, well you had pretty much had it. This all might sound a bit extreme but it was all in a kind of sarcastic way. The guy had been travelling 26 years and even lived in the dorm room. We soon had a soft spot for Alan and would sit all night listening to his crazy stories.
Anyway Melaka. Another UNESCO world hertiage site so it was really nice to walk around. The first day we had a wander around the China town and across the river which was nice. But we soon found ourselfs back in the hostel sat around with everyone chatting to Alan.
For tea we walked to a restaurant that everone raved about it having the best tandoori chicken and it really did it was DELICIOUS! That night was also the eve of Mederka day, basically the even of there independance day so everyone was out in the streets burning all sorts and the town was full of stages set up for the countdown and fireworks.
The next day we hired a bike to explore but we got so hot so were'nt out too long, we soon ended up back at the hostel drinking free coffee with everyone and listening to Alans crazy stories.
That pretty much sums up our time in Melaka, Singapore next!!!
