And here we are. Our last day in this magical country. We booked this trip back in January and never thought it would get here, and now it is almost over.
We had a great last day. This morning at breakfast, all of us were still on a high from seeing the amazing Northern Lights display last night. We hit the road early enough to get to our one and only stop before heading back to Reykjavik - the Seljalandsfoss Waterfall.
We were one of the first people there this morning, so got to enjoy the scenery without it being too crowded. We saw so many waterfalls, not to sound ungrateful, but it was kind of like, whatever, another waterfall. BUT, this one you got to walk behind and see the 8th Wonder of the World (according the the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland) THE BACKSIDE OF WATER!!! Ha ha. So this made our last waterfall stop really unique, and we did take it its glory and beauty.
We made it back to Reykjavik to the same hotel we stayed at when our tour started, and was able to check into our room before we went and did the very last thing as a group, the Reykjavik City Tour.
Even though Jaime and I technically had 2 full days in the city when we arrived, we only saw what we saw of Reykjavik when we were there at night, so not only was it sweet to see it during the day, but added bonus of having a guide with us. I gotta tell you Karl, knew everything about everything. But, I suppose that is why is such a great tour guide.
2 of our group did not come on the tour as they had other things to do, so it was just 6 of us and Karl. It was a lovely walk around the city. The bulidings are small and colorful. Full of murals, and street art. The streets are cobblestone, and the city has this awesome small-town quiant feeling, even thought it is a large city. The views of the mountains and water are spectacular, and we finally got to go into the famous Hallgrimskirkja Church. It was beautiful inside as well.
The city tour was not long, before we left, the group got together and put together our money to give Karl a very generous tip. He was so smart and kept us so safe. Some activities we were supposed to do one night, he reccommended to save to the following day to allow for better weather, and he really timed everything perfectly. It was a little sad saying bye to everybody, as it always is when you spend that many hours in a shuttle with people, you tend to bond a bit. A few of the group had reservations at the Blue Lagoon for that evening, so they went back to the hotel to catch their ride, and Jaime and I stayed in the city to walk around some more and find dinner before turning in for the night.
During our city walk, Karl had us stop by a very famous hot dog cart. I think I mentioned earlier that street hot dogs are a pretty popular food in Iceland. I of course did not get one, BUT got an awesome waffle from a waffle cart later on!
We found an INCREDIBLE Thai place right by our hotel and enjoyed delicious Thai food. Our transportation is coming to pick us up at 4am tomorrow, so need to attempt to get some good sleep.
