We chose Nashville because we wanted to experience the honky tonk life. This was not to be. We made a big mistake. The hostels were over our budget so we booked a hotel which was cheaper. What we didn't know (kind of) was that the hotel was quite far from downtown Nashville. The area we stayed in was pretty dodgy. We were told by a man who worked at the airport to be careful as the area wasn't nice. Even the taxi driver didn't know where it was and also the airport shuttle didn't go there. We ended up spending $33 each way. Extortion.
The hotel room was nice considering it was more like a motel. We had a queen bed each and a TV. We watched a lot of TV. We were pretty put off by the area we stayed in and the drain the taxi ride had on our finances.
We went into downtown Nashville for one day. There wasn't much to it unless there is another part (except for Opry). It's pretty small centre of a city. We found out it cost $15 to go inside the country music hall of fame. We decided against it as we aren't hard core fans.
The main street has a lot of honky-tonky bars which was exciting but again we didn't go in. There were bands playing in each one but not a lot of people in each. It was during the week and the middle of the day though.
I regret not going into a honky tonk. I think if we stayed in the centre in a hostel we could have had a good night out and experienced what we came there for. Maybe a small town next time? Possibly Alabama. Unfortunately we were disheartened.
Highlight: Taco Bell cheesy gorditas and lots of friends on telly.
I think I would like to go back (not in a rush though) but I would stay in the centre or alternatively try Memphis.
It wasn't Nashville's fault. We were just being lame and made wrong decisions.
