Hello from Lima…..
We flew from Cusco to Lima and it was an interesting flight! We were slightly worried about the safety of the plane and it smoked at one point before take off and some parts seemed to move that shouldn’t! Still we made it in one piece! My ears also went funny and they took about 2 days to recover.
Arrive in Lima and were picked up by Malka hostel…we thought this was a free pick up but it actually cost us 8 quid- not very clear on website. Also when we got there we were not in a private room as we’d booked but in a dorm- not a major problem but annoying as price difference was very small. We did speak to them about it but didn’t get very far so we stayed where we were! Aside from this the hostel was pretty nice though and in a safe area. We walked to a local shopping street and had a look around. The local mall was nice and made me feel Christmassy for the first time as there were decorations everywhere.
That evening at the hostel we met some nice Canadian guys, Justin and Etienne and an Argentinean guy called Juan Pablo. They were good fun and very chatty so we sat talking to them and drinking a few beers for the rest of the evening.
The next day we went on a bit of an adventure with our new friends. We were initially going out to get some Ceviche (a Peruvian specialty which we thought we should try) The restaurant was closed though so we opted for Peruvian fast food instead! It was pretty good. Afterwards we got a ‘combi’ (a small van type bus) to Mireflores, a beach area of Lima. It was lovely and we watched some para-gliders soaring over the beach and wandered around the shopping mall. After this we took another combi to an area called Barranco. It was really nice here too, there were bars and stalls surrounding a break in the cliff. We bought a few bits and pieces off some little jewellery stalls and then walked down to the beach. We laid for a while chilling out in the sun. It was an ok beach but a bit brown and I wouldn’t have wanted to venture in to the water!
Headed back towards hostel area and ate dinner in a Chinese restaurant. The food was amazing and so cheap and we washed it all down with a Pisco Sour-yum.
Spent our last evening in Lima at the hostel again drinking beer and chatting with the guys. As well as a few games of darts and table tennis. I was glad we went on our Lima adventure and I think we saw more of the city than we might have, had we been alone. It was very reassuring to have some Spanish speaking guides!
The next day we were up and went out to try and get some clothes from the shopping mall- it seemed to be closed to we headed back to the hostel for some breakfast. The it was time to head to the airport.
Next stop….LA….very excited and looking forward to being in a country where we can speak the language!
Peace out
