Early morning on the 30th May I boarded the Eurostar train from London to Paris, and I have to say this is probably the best way to travel between the two cities. The journey (using this word for you dad ) only took 2 1/2 hrs and it went through the English Channel (this took about 20mins). The maxium speed the train got to was 140km per hour so it was cool.
I have to say Paris is a beautiful place, but after the 6 days there I was ready to move on.
Day 1: Got into Paris around 1pm and finally got to the hotel at 2. So dumped my bags in the room and then decided to go for a walk and check out the area that I was staying in. 5 mins into my walk along the street that the hotel is in I found the Moulin Rogue. I had no idea how close it actually was to where I was staying, but it was cool. Pretty much all the shops after that were just sex shops and peep shows, however if I went in the other direction of the street, it would be souvenir shop after souvenir shop, so definitely had a bit of everything.
Just when I was walking around for a couple of hours I knew that I was going to like this place. The style of the buildings were just beautiful. So I guess you can say the first day was pretty laid back, but after that it was just go go go.
Day 2: About 5 min walk from the hotel was the famous Sacre Coeur. Be warned now if you are ever in Paris and going to see this beware of the most annoying men in the park trying to scam you to buy a hand made bracelet off them. Luckily for me I was able to drop the hint nicely that I was not interested, so they went straight onto the other people. However from what I've been told that can be real smartass b******s. One of the guys who I've met in my travels actually had 10 of these guys surround him and pretty much the only way he could get out was to buy one off them.
So afterall that once I got through these guys and up a few stairs I reached the Sacre Coeur. The view of the city you can get from here is quite nice esp. if it is a clear day. Once again I went inside, but just like London no photo's were allowed so you will just have to check out the pics of the outside view of it when I post them up.
Once I finished here and dodged all the guys on the way back down I walked to the Arc De Triomphe which is situated on the biggest roundabout in the world in the middle of the very famous Champ Elysess Avenue. Here they have the Tomb Of the Unknown Soldier and en eternal flame commemorating the dead of the two world wars. Once again I was a sucker when it came to stairs and walked up to the top which I think was around 150 stairs (51m high) to see an awesome view of the city. Here I could see the Effiel tower from one angle, the Louvre from another, and then Notre Dame and so many more. Definitely worth the 8 euro that I paid.
Seeing as the Arc is on Champ Elysess Avenue, I thought I may aswell check it out right, just like any normal person would. Have to say though the shops were just a little out of my budget, but lucky for me I don't buy Armani, or Gucci or Cartier anyway, so no biggie really. It was really just good to people watch in this area. The girls all dressed up trying to look a million bucks. Quite funny really.
Day 3: This was the day when I had my tourist moment in Paris. I decided to give my feet a rest for the day and jumped on a Hop-on/Hop-off bus and see a little more of the city. My main stop of the day if you haevn't already figured it out was the big metal tower you know the one the Effiel Tower, and damn that thing is just absolutely massive. It was just awesome standing back and just taking the whole site of it in. I just couldn't believe that after seeing it in books and TV that I was actually there standing right in front of it. After having lunch and just staring at it for like an hr, decided I could probably go up to the view decks and see what the view from up there was really like.
Seeing as my legs had pretty much been doing nothing all day, I thought I'd climb up the stairs instead of taking the elevator (also it was cheaper to climb up, and when your a backpacker everybit counts). So 668 stairs later (and I even have a pic to prove it was this many steps) I made it to the second viewing gallery. Now I thought what I could see from the Arc De Triomphe was good, but damn this was just so much better. After spending another hr and taking it all in, I decided I should probably walk back down all those 668 stairs to get back to the bottom. Obviously going down is better then going up, so it was nowhere near as bad.
Jumped back on the bus after this and just took in the rest of the sites, but I have to say really nothing could've beaten that in this city.
Day 4: Thought it was time to act like a kid for the day so I headed to Disneyland Paris. Arrived there just after 10am and didn't get back until 9pm. A long day but a fun one. Have to say though definitely not as fun going on your own, but all in all still enjoyable. Disneyland in the US is going to be a lot better, cos I'll be going crazy with my sister.
With Paris it was good, cos it was celebrating their 15th b'day there, although I have to say I prefer the Tokyo one a lot better so far (Aug will be the first time for Dinseyland in the states).
Day 5: On the first Sunday on every month entry to the Louvre Museum is free, so how lucky I was that I was there for this. So obviously I went and checked out Mona, however same old story, and I couldn't take a photo. Firstly the painting isn't that big and it's behind a very thick glass cabinet and they have 2 security guards patrolling it the whole time, so even if you tried to sneak in a shot, you would more than likely been seen and be made to delete it. To be honest I was only in the museum for about 1 1/2 hrs, cos the thing is just too damn big, plus not a big fan of paintings, but seeing the Mona is just a thing you have to do while there right?
After that I strolled down along the Siene river to Notre Dame. Here is where I got a shock, as photo's were actually allowed. I nearly collasped when I found out. This again was another really beautiful cathedral, but after seeing a few they all start to look the same. The stained glass windows, however were fantastic, so I got a few pics of them.
Day 6: Seeing as I had to leave the next day, this day was spent doing boring laundry and then chilling at a cafe and bar with the two girls who I've been sharing a room with in the hotel. 2 aussie chicks from Adelaide who are travelling together by the names of Shani and Ranee. Found that the 3 of us would be together for the next 2 weeks on Busabout, until we all start going in different directions, so spent the day getting to know eachother a little more and it was definitely a chill day that I needed after the full on exploring that was done over the past few days.
Next stop is Brugge in Belgium, which will be the first official stop on my Busabout trip around Europe, and just can't wait to start it after nearly 3 weeks of seeing 3 cities. Definitely spent enough time in Paris and totally over the Scooters and crazy drivers that they have here.
Busabout here I come........
