We finally left Thailand and made our way to Penang, Malaysia, an unexpected stop as all the buses direct to KL were full due to Chinese New Year. Bad timing from us! However it all turned out right in the end as Penang was beautiful and such a relaxed place. We were dropped off at the wrong hostel originally as there are 3 different branches in the city, but Marcel, one of the receptionists at the correct hostel, saved the day and walked over to direct us to the proper place! The hostel, when we finally arrived, was gorgeous. Massage showers, a brilliant breakfast spread and private lockers with plug sockets locked inside. It's funny what you get excited about when travelling!
We only had one full day in Penang so did some sightseeing, managing to get on the wrong bus and find our way to a shopping centre on the way! Eventually we got to Fort Cornwallis, the British Governors place of residence when Penang was still a colony. There were cannons on the battlements and a gorgeous view of the bay, but apart from that there wasn't much to see, and we were about to expire with the heat! Later on we'd planned to go up Penang hill to watch the sunset, but after waiting 45 minutes for the bus we surmised it wasn't going to turn up and trudged back to the hostel a bit gutted. On a positive note we were staying right by Little India and there were some amazing smells so we went off to get some curry as I'd been obsessing over Indian curry for about a week. And by heck it was the best curry I've ever had, and only about 3 quid for the lot! That was it for Penang - a short and sweet visit but a place I'd definitely like to return to.
