Day 6 - Happy Hour in Kyoto
For the first time on our trip we set an alarm to force ourselves to get up early this morning. We skipped breakfast and went straight to Hiroshima Station to get our train to Kyoto.
After a (terrible) coffee and an identified meat sandwich at the station we ran into a friend of mine (Bec's) from high school! It's funny where you can find people you know, even on the other side of the world! This friend will be in Kyoto at the same time as us so we will try to catch up with her again.
We arrived in Kyoto and despite being warned against the cost, we decided a taxi would be the easiest way to get to our hotel. According to google it should be a 10 minute drive but we ended up stuck in traffic for ages, listening to a terrible Japanese radio station, so it took a lot longer than expected.
Our hotel here (Kyoto Royal Hotel & Spa) is in a great location in town- close to the imperial palace, subway station and SUSHI!
We only have two nights here so we didn't waste any time in going off to see the Imperial palace. Sadly as it was a public holiday we couldn't tour inside the castle but we spent hours wandering the gardens which were very Japanesey and pretty.
We FINALLY had sushi (for the first time in Japan) for dinner. It's very cheap at only 137 yen per plate ($1.60) so we ate A LOT! The sushi train has complimentary green tea on tap which we thought was pretty exciting!
We ended our first night in Kyoto with some cocktails, beer and scotch on the rocks in our hotel bar for happy hour! And devoured some sweets from a local bakery for dessert. Yep, definitely getting fatter. What a day!
