Day 5- Oh Deer and the Octop****
Today we took a tram, train and ferry over to Miyajima Island off Hiroshima. The ferry trip over was so windy and absolutely freezing but it was well worth nearly getting frost bite for, as the island was absolutely beautiful. Wild deer roam around everywhere and thry definitely aren't shy around people.
We ordered one of our new favorite foods from a street vendor - fried squid balls (or Octop**** Balls as we like to call them). A deer came straight over and tried to get his share of our lunch. We were so busy trying to protect our food that it was too late to save our map by the time we realised the deer had taken to eating that instead. We snatched the map back and hilariously it had a big chunk missing in the middle! You know, the essential park which showed directions to every place we wanted to go!
We guesstimated our way over to the giant Tori gate on the Island. It's one of those big orange structures that are famous in Japan and sit out on the water. A very picturesque site and the main reason we went to Miyajima.
Miyajima is also home to Mt Misen. We hiked up the lower point of the mountain and then took two different sky rails up the rest of the way. The view from the top was breathtaking! We could see all the way back over Hiroshima and many other islands which surround Miyajima.
On the way down the mountain we had worked up quite an appetite so we feasted on some cutely shaped Hello Kitty and Winnie the Pooh custard creamed buns and an omelette-like kebab! The food available from the Island's street vendors was all delicious!
After making our way back to Hiroshima we had dinner at a small restaurant near our hotel. We had Okonomiyaki again (noodle omelette) and a few Asahi to celebrate our last night in Hiroshima! Aaron was gutted whe he realised that as a result of the language barrier we were only getting one Okonomiyaki dish instead of the two we thought we ordered. So of course we made a stop for some
Fried chicken and Octop**** balls at a street vendor on the way home.
I think we've both out on about 5 kgs! Definitely not going hungry.
Off to Kyoto tomorrow, hopefully get to walk off a bit of our growing bellys.
