STATS
Departure: Kissimmee, Florida
Arrival: Tifton, Georgia
Miles: 262
Travel Time: 6 hours
As the son sinks slowly in his mother's arms, we say goodbye to Walt Disney World and head north toward Nashville, Tennessee, and the Grand Ole Opry.
That might have been a bit dramatic. Actually, I'm theme-parked out and ready for the next adventure. It’s going to be days before I want to go to another theme park. (I’m trying to talk Barbara into stopping at Disneyland in Anaheim on the way home. I’ll be ready by then.)
In the meantime, our next target is Nashville, so we headed north on I-75. Our first night’s stop was in Tifton, Georgia. Now, Tifton holds a special place in our hearts. Here’s the story:
In 1991, also in an RV and on the way home from Walt Disney World (only we had two young children with us), our brand-new Jamboree 21 foot class-C motor home broke down on the freeway. Barbara had just taken over driving and was merging on to the interstate, when the engine stopped. I turned to her and said, "What are you doing?" She didn’t like my tone. But we don’t need to go there.
Barbara was able to coast the RV over to the side, and we got on the CB radio (no cell phones then). We talked to one trucker and a fourteen year old boy who was trying to meet girls. No help.
It wasn’t long until a Georgia State Trooper stopped and helped us. He called a tow truck and waited with us until it showed up. Then he drove all four of us to a motel and café, where we holed up for the next three days. The kids loved it; swimming and TV. Everyone was very friendly there and really helped us. So we were excited to come back and see Tifton. We stayed at the KOA in Tifton. They have a lot more gnats now than I remember. Also, the town has grown into a megalopolis. Ah, the wheels of progress.
Anyway, it was nice to see it again.

Rich Why is it that the most memorable parts of a trip is being stuck on the road with a broken down veichle and two tired kids. Been there, done that. However given your former experience, Triften seems indeed like a friendly city. Not like Pothole, California where we were stuck for several days with a broken trailer and all 15 citizens didn't know how to smile . Never heard of that city? Well I changed the name to protect the guilty.
Leigh Ann I remember that trip! Doug and I were housesitting for you and taking care of the two dogs. He (Doug, not the dog) made some spaghetti and accidentally dumped about an entire container of black pepper in the sauce. We tried to scoop most of it out, but ask my brother some day about that meal. Whoo! Glad you enjoyed Tifton sans broken RV this time.
Sharon wilkes Hey, so glad to get your update. Soooo, we are at Lake of the Springs. Have enjoyed hiking and kayaking on the lake. We kayaked to the headwaters yesterday. Today we explored other campsite options. The campsite we were in was like being in the ghetto, way too crowded, too many barking dogs, the yappy type and too many huge family groups all trying to out yell each other for attention. We made the decision to move to another area which turns out to be higher up the campground which gives us excellent internet service and cell service as well as beautiful quiet, peaceful neighbors unlike the ghetto which came complete with partners shouting expletives at each other! Tomorrow we will do some more kayaking and biking and hiking. I'm getting ready for another trip on Thursday to Zion National Park with my friend, Rebecca.
