Off Exploring
So this morning I was woken up at 6:30 by loud voices coming from the street below my window. I stumbled downstairs and found a pot of coffee already brewed (thanks!!) and went outside for my morning coffee and cigarette. I saw the women who were making all the noise across the street at the bus stop. I didn't want to assume that they were prostitutes just because of the way they were dressed, but then they started yelling 'hey baby, bring me home' to passing cars. When I went back upstairs the roommate from Seattle (she used to work here) says that that's a known prostitute corner. I don't remember the hostel website saying anything about that... :) It's weird because this is a pretty nice neighborhood. At night there's a nice, expensive looking restaurant with valet parking but at 7AM there are prostitutes. What kind of prostitutes work at 7AM anyway??? It was another long day. I decided to take the metro today instead of walking, since I knew I'd be walking a lot anyway. First stop was the Holocaust Museum, which I highly recommend. I didn't burst out sobbing, as I half expected to, but my eyes did tear up a few times. It's a really sad museum, but also very interesting. After about two hours I couldn't take it anymore and left. It's really good that the museum is in a populated touristy area because I was walking around in a daze for about an hour after seeing that museum. I would have been perfect to mug, but luckily that didn't happen. I walked around the National Mall and saw the Smithsonian Castle and the National History Museum. The DC National History Museum is okay (the Field Museum in Chicago is still the best I've ever seen), but it's free so it's worth seeing. Then I walked to the U.S. Capital and walked all the way back. My feet hate me once again. Then I took the Metro over to the Supreme Court. By then I had seen everything that I wanted to see, but it was only about one, so I decided to just wander around a bit. I came upon a huge building that looked really important, with flags, statues, and a fountain out front. I thought it was some important historical building, so I went in to see what it was and saw Ann Taylor. A mall!! A really nice mall. Actually it was Union Station. It has stores, Amtrak, and the Metro. I also found the first real food for a decent price in Washington DC. So far all I'd really seen was museum food, which is not very good and is way overpriced. Then I decided that it was time to head back to the hostel. It's still early, but I don't know what else to do. Might as well rest. Tomorrow I drive to Boston and since the DC traffic is worse than I expected I'm guessing that the drive will take a lot longer than I originally thought. I don't mind though because it will give my feet a much needed break. Then on Friday and Saturday they will be put to work again exploring Boston and Salem.
