Darwin, another place were things didnt go to plan. My plan was get to Darwin put our bags somwhere for the day and have a walk about, then head back to airport and sleep there for the night and get up for our silly a clock flight! Well what I didnt realise was that our flight got in a 4:30 in the moring there was F all Squared open. So our first 'night' sleep in Australia consisted of the floor of the arrivals hall in Darwin Airport for a couple of hours until a taxi would turn up and take us to the city centre and maybe find a hostel that we could check into the night and head back to 'bed'. So thats what we did, we got into Darwin around 9 ish and went to a hostel and they told us they had nothing available until 12, so we cried a little and went and got some breakfast, and lucky found somewhere that had a room that we could go to straight away, so that was the answer.
We got back up around 2 o'clock and decided to go for a walk and headed to the Botanical Gardens, this would have been interesting if you where interesting in trees and plants something me and Charlotte found out that we werent, espeically in 35 degree heat and 99% humdity, we walked through a 'fake' rainforest that looked pretty real to me and then went and sat in an air conditioned room for 30 minutes. What a great walk that turned out to be.
Now i knew that the aboriginal people were fully intergated into Australian western culture, but i was still shocked when i saw large group of them sitting together in the park. Not doing anything special, well they werent throwing a boomerang about of riding about on a kangaroo! So after our culture shock we went for a walk around Darwin, dusk had fallen and we were just heading back to our hostel when i thought i saw a large bird. I only bring this up, as i though this strange for 2 reasons, birds arent nocturnal, and that was a large bird. Then an other one went past, these werent bird, these were the biggest bats in the world, living here right in Darwin, what I couldnt understand was, 1, why were people allowed out while these things flew about, 2, how could something this big fly and 3 Why had the government not sent out the airforce to shoot these things down. So after this sight we skipped home in a merrily fashion as fast as we could and locked the window. Luckily for us we were preparing for a 5 am flight which meant we were getting the bus again at silly o clock!
