Departing from Kathmandu Airport, a lot smoother than our arrival! This time we were on the ball, Malaysian Airlines, claiming frequent flyer miles for the first time and admiring the United Nations plane parked up on the dusty tarmac.
Before we knew it, the plane had taken off and the two of us sat back sipping on our complimentary Tiger beers. Malaysian airlines, handing out Malaysia's finest beer for FREE! Hannah wasn't overly keen on the beer, so to be expected J I took advantage of this opportunity and place my finger on the attendant buzzer, "Ding" before I could blink, one of the friendly attendants arrived at my seat. "2 Tigers please", well as they were free I thought I had better drink both mine and Hannah's :D.
A few beers later, we touched down on Malaysian soil. It wasn't the smoothest of landings, approaching, the plane was bouncing up and down, side to side and forward and back and the pilot hit the breaks! Regardless though we touched down safely once again entered a new country. This one was country number 4 for the trip.
An old friend of mine, CT Phaun, who I met in Queenstown and spent hours upon hours hanging out with the guy, was waiting at the airport for us with his girlfriend Tiff and his fancy metallic grey BMW 5 series. A quick hello and a manly hug, then we jumped into the car and began our drive back to the Phaun residence.
The drive took about an hour. The journey back involved a mix of; catching up and talking about old times, admiring the clean and civil roads, and never been so happy to see some familiar signs "Burger King", "Starbucks" etc etc.
We arrived at CT's mansion! Or so it seemed. His house was 4 stories high, each of the enormous rooms having an en-suite, downstairs is a huge open plan living room, dining room and garden, to top things off he even had a maid! The house was awesome! No time to rest though; drop off the bags and a change of clothes, then out for dinner. Stopping in a large food court, surrounded by palm trees, bamboo stands selling food and Liverpool vs. Everton on TV!
Having no idea what a traditional Malaysian dish consists of, we let CT take the reins and order us a few of the typical dishes that people eat in Malaysia. A few minutes later a waiter arrived with a plate of noodles, thick and dark in colour and bowl a noodles in a soup… Strange but ok, I must say it wasn't the best food I have eaten but hey it did the job. We finished the food between the 4 of us, then head off to a busy bar about 30 minutes away. In Kuala Lumpur, it seems to be that all of the bars that the 'youngsters' go to are in shopping malls… Either way though, the bar was cool; we sat down and enjoyed a tower of Tiger (about 2 litres) and just spent some time chilling out.
Over the next few days CT, his family and his girlfriend Tiff treated us to a number of different meals, drinks and site seeing! Their hospitality was just amazing, they all kept us busy and felt bad if we stayed at home and did nothing. Although some days we actually had to make a point of staying home so that we could apply for jobs and finish my TEFL course.
To return the favour and say thanks to everyone, we cooked up an English breakfast for his family, which went down a treat. Then on our last evening we cooked up a lasagna for his family and two really cool friends however this was a massive flop, the pasta was undercooked, tasting like leather due to a lack of ingredients! OOOPSSSS! This was quickly forgotten though, sitting down around his Koi fishpond and drinking a few beers. I cannot forget to mention that Tiff fell in pond!! Good times…
Catching up with CT was amazing, I hadn't seen him in about 3 years however it felt more like 2 weeks when finally seeing him again. He really looked after us and made sure that we had a good time in KL.
