Nik and Nat's Adventures
Words can't describe how perfect this day was!
Had an early start and headed out of our campsite in Airlie Beach, in time to get to the Whitsunday Airport ready for our helicopter flight, (although it was more of a Airfield really). The flight lasted around about 40 mins, and until we landed at Hamilton Island Airport it was just Nat and I (oh well and Chris the pilot of course), where we stopped to collect two other passengers for the trip. The water was crystal clear and the sand on the Island beaches was white. The flight took in views of Whitsunday Island itself including the stunning Whitehaven Beach and Hill-Inlet. We then flew on out over the ocean for what seemed like only mins although the reef was some way out. Chris told us to look out for Whales after I asked him about the likelihood of spotting Dolphins. He told us to keep our eyes peeled as we are now coming into the Humpback breeding season here in Queensland. After about 10-15mins of flying we spotted a tiny speck in the middle of the sea, and sure enough it was a whale. I was so happy, (I cried a little bit too, which I probably shouldn't admit!!!) we were very lucky to see one of the first whales in the area this winter. We arrived at The Great Barrier Reef, and the flight took us out over two coral reefs and over the famous "Heart-Reef". We then landed at Reefworld, for some snorkling before returning to Airlie Beach on a 2 hour boat cruise, with the sun setting. Wonderful day, with many beautiful memories. The reef really did look just like this postcard from the air. To finish the day off, while Nat and I were drinking cheap cask (boxed) wine outside the van, we saw a shooting star. Life couldn't get much better.
