Banter All Over The World
Dave asked me on the 1st night in Guangzhou, 'Which do you prefer, China, the country, Chyna from the WWF or the song 'China in your hand' by T'pau?' After, careful consideration, over some noodles and several bottles of beer, China just edged out T'pau mainly due to its temples!
On Thursday morning the travellers awoke and got dressed in their usual attire of shorts, flip-flops and T-shirt and began their 40 minute walk to the bus station, only to find that it was 'Shunting' it down. Jake feared a Tsunami but we think it was just a monsoon in the end!! Monsoon - Bossed! NEXT!
The bus journey was eventful. The wanderers got settled and were enjoying a well deserved rest and a cheeky cheeseburger. 1 bite into the burger and everyone got off and we followed onto another bus and got settled again. 2 more bites into the burger and everyone got off again and this time we were going through customs. This meant that all the contents of my pockets had to be emptied including the burger which was duely x-rayed. Turns out there was nothing hidden inside it which was nice to know.
After 3 hours of footballers top trumps, to our delight we were dropped at a hotel, to our horror, it was not our hotel!! b*****. It turns out that not many people speak or read english here so we had a few problems getting to our hotel. But using the universal language of banter we managed it.
We have eaten and drunk well over the past 4 nights and it is not too expensive and have stayed the past two nights at a nice Youth Hostel in Shamian Island which is a islan within the main city by the 'Pearl River'.
We have also walked a hell of a long way and the calf muscles have a few twinges. The walking was worth it though as we saw plenty of temples and have been up a mountain on a cable car and the views can be found in the albums.
The main problem has been not dying when crossing roads. Turns out the Chinese don't stop for zebra crossings. This meant that a good, early, clear call has to be given and quick running between the wickets is essential.
Last night we hit 'Bar Street' hard. It seems, however, that it is not quite the same as the 'Bar Street' found in Kavos. We went into a bar and were promptly bought 2 lagers by a chubby Chinese Man who became our buddy for the evening. His best friend however, was not the biggest fan of us. He poured us half a pint of vodka each and proceded to down his and then looked across the table at DSW and pointed to his glass. We politely declined this offer and he snapped, giving us the finger shouting 'Ruck You!'. He was restrained by the owner of the bar and we sat there sipping our vodka quietly. Now, I think I could of knocked this fella out but he may have been a dab hand at martial arts and we weren't ruling out the possibility of a Samarai Sword being produced. Anyway, he was chucked out and we carried on boozing. To say sorry, the chubby lad got on stage and sang us a song. Very Touching.
We leave at 4 o'clock today for a 12 hour overnight journey to Nanning, where we stay for 1 night and then it is off to Vietnam.
All the Best.
Jake and DSW.
P.S. Please let us know if these entries are as boring as Suchley's emails because if there are we will stop ASAP.
