Monday 23rd October - day 34.
Half Moon Bay, to Alcatraz Island and San Francisco airport.
Time to go home. But first some housekeeping and a trip to Alcatraz.
We were up at 6am to spring clean the van ready for return. We had hoped for a swim but a glance at the sat nav told us that several road traffic accidents were causing big delays in our journey to the Cruise America depot. We set off and crawled through the traffic to arrive only a little late.
We returned the RV - only the most cursory inspection of our spring cleaning! We donated all our Ikea purchases to a surprised but grateful German couple, and then took a shared taxi to the airport.
At this point we could have just settled down at the airport for a few hours, but instead we stored our bags in left luggage and took a Lyft taxi to Pier 33 to take the boat to Alcatraz.
The trip to Alcatraz and the audio tour of the prison were absolutely brilliant. On the island we walked up the steep path from the dock to the cell house. This was full of the primitive barred cells where some of America's most notorious criminals were incarcerated between 1934 and 1963.
We made it back to the airport exactly in time for our check in, leaving us a lovely hour and a half to sit on a sunny balcony enjoying a couple of craft beers until it was time to board our flight home.
