18th - Romantic Road
We left Munich and headed for Augsburg on the Romantic Road, which we followed up to Rottenburg. A cute walled town, where we stopped for lunch, enjoyed some of the local delicacy (a pastry ball covered in chocolate or caramel) and saw another cuckoo clock do it's thing. We then continued heading North up to Wurburg where we joined the Auto-Bahn (speed record in Romeo is now 195km/hr) to Cologne.
19th - Bonn
We spend the day roaming around Bonn, a town just to the South of Cologne at the start of the Rhine river. We went for a walk in a park along the Rhine before going into the centre of Bonn. Where we walked the streets, found a great café and continued the tradition of trying more German beer.
20th & 21st - Wuppertal
We arrived in the small city of Wuppertal in West Germany (where my mom was born) to the very welcoming Mack family (my mom's cousin, husband, 2 daughters and excited dog). We enjoyed a traditional german dinner made with potato and black forest ham. The next morning we hopped on the schwebebahn (think train but with rails overhead as the carriage dangles). This inventive mode of transport is the pride and joy of the area. We travelled the 18km track taking in the views. We stopped in the suburb of Barmen to try out a local Dunkel beer in a funky pub - formally public baths. We then stopped in Edelveld for our first currywurst and pommes with mayo YUMMMM. That afternoon we stocked on some more German beers to sample!! Needless to say, Chris was loving it. The next day - we went to the pictueresque medieval castle of Schlossburg. Afterwards we went out for another wonderful German meal in an old village and walked around the cute cobbled streets and slate cladded houses. On our way home we stopped at the Haribo factory to stock up on sweets!!
