WAIHEKE ISLAND - AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND
An Auckland must... What a beautiful island known as the island of millionaires and judging by some of the houses there I'm not at all surprised. Just a 30 minute ferry ride from the bottom of queenstreet (on which you get some great city views) and costing just 36 dollars return or less with a discount voucher found in the Auckland A to Z or many other sites if you google it.
We... stopped at a hostel called Hekerua lodge in Little Oneroa. (Pronounced on er roa not one roa as a local pointed out) Walking from the ferry it took about an hour but buses are regular, cheap and straight forward as it's pretty much one bus route for the whole island (bus timetables scare me as a rule).
The hostel was really cool with a great chilled vibe. Just a 10 minute walk to a nice, fairly secluded beach and a 25 minute walk to Oneroa, which is a beautiful little beach town with a few shops, restaurants and other forms of living stuff needed in day to day life. The sea was fall of tiny little jelly fish the size of a finger nail, there were no warning signs about them and we didn't get stung or die. So I can only assume these are ok, however I will not be held responsible for anyone else, if your allergic to dying be careful. The hostel we stayed in had a decent sized plunge pool, a jacuzzi and nice decked chill area where you can chat to other travellers. Be sure to take mosquito repellent as it's pretty much in a little forest and they can be ruthless! The locals on this small island are so friendly and willing to help, don't be surprised when they all stop to talk to you.
We got the bus to Onetangi (on er tangi) which was a lot quieter than Oneroa but as beautiful. With a long beach to chill on with big expensive houses surrounding in the hills. With loads of vineyards around and covering the whole island you won't be short of wine tastings, which again if you look on the internet or books you will be able to get a discounted vineyard tour and tastings.
Food and drink wise it didn't seem like the cheapest of places but if you're careful and check around the different restaurants you can get an ok deal on some really good eats.
The weather was amazing when we were here which always helps but for the price of the hostel and ferry it's definitely worth going to this millionaire wine island.
